Dalwhinnie 15 YR Single Malt Scotch Whisky

One of the more delicate scotches on the market, this Highlands dram is a great choice to get your toes wet. The distillery calls its single malt the “gentle spirit” and, indeed, this refined bottling doesn’t offer any of the more challenging notes (like smoke) that turn off so many beginners. Instead, it’s liquidized honey, citrusy on the nose with a touch of dried fruit on the palate, all delivered with a creamy, inviting mouthfeel. 86 Points,Whisky Advocate. July 2019

Along with Cragganmore, this is one of the underrated members of the original Classic Six. Quite why has always slightly baffled me. OK, it isn’t smoky, but the nose has a deep, soft, honeyed sweetness: think caramelized fruits, hints of thick cream, and a light touch of fennel and sharp citrus. Thick in the center and very gentle, it’s that chunkiness in the middle that is the secret to its beauty. 43% ABV (Vol. 21, #2)  Reviewed by: Dave Broom
