Laubade L'Unique 2006 Le Plant De Graisse Bas Armagnac
The nose opens with aromas of ripe apples, apricots, orange zest, mace, linden, all spice, black pepper, and black tea. The palate has a savory edge to it with brown baking spices, and black pepper giving way to tree fruits and caramel with some dried flowers to finish. A perfect accompaniment to the season of summer. D&M Tasting Notes
A bottling of the Plant de Graisse grape. Thanks to new genetic testing we now know that this grape is one of the many descendants of the grape Gouais Blanc, known as the Casanova of grapes (Aligote, Colombard and Riesling are also offspring). The Plant de Graisse grape gets its name (which translates to fat) from the richness of the must after pressing. In the 1950s, it was widely planted in Gers and Landes. Departments– records from the time show that it covered over 2,700 hectares (16 hectares remain today).
In 1997, Laubade planted a 3.5 acre block of this historically significant grape. After patiently waiting for the grape to get established, in 2006 they harvested, fermented and distilled the resulting wine. After aging in oak for 15 years, barrels 82008 and 3657 were blended together with a resulting ABV of 46.3%. Bottled in March 2022. Michael Kennel, D&M
