Planteray Trinidad 2011 12 year Kopke Port-finished Rum
D&M Tasting Notes:
First distilled on the towering column stills at Angostura-owned Trinidad Distillers Ltd. in 2011, this molasses-based rum underwent initial aging in Trinidad for 11 years in ex-bourbon casks, at which point it was shipped off to France for an additional 15 months in Ferrand cognac casks, as is the norm for all Planteray products. At this time, it was then racked off to a set of ex-Port casks sourced from Kopke, the oldest surviving Port house. Bottled at 47.2% with 0 g/L of dosage or color additives and a beautifully perfumed 495 g/HL AA of volatile aromatics, including 145 g/HL AA of esters.
On the nose, red currant, date syrup, and ripe plantain lead against a background of baking spice and saddle leather. The palate expands into juicy pink guava, more red currants, and dragonfruit, with warm, firm tannins ground the dram in cassia bark, dried fig, and oak spice. -DI, April 2026
