Jean-Louis Chave St. Joseph Rouge 2022 1.5L

CRITICAL ACCLAIM:

“A bruiser, blockbuster style, with a richly styled beam of cassis and black currant offering generosity and ripeness, all laced up with finely polished tannins. Shows poise and power, with smoked meat, lavender and racy mineral energy drawing out the smoky, beguiling finish. Drink now through 2040.” - 95 PTS, KRISTEN BIELER, WINE SPECTATOR

“Leading off the 2022s, gorgeous red and black fruits, spice, pepper, and bouquet garni define the 2022 Saint Joseph. Very focused and layered on the palate, it shows medium to full-bodied richness and elegant tannins. It's very much in the sunny yet structured style of the vintage and will have 10-12 years of prime drinking. Drink 2025-2037.” - 94 PTS, JEB DUNNUCK (05/2025)

“The 2022 Saint-Joseph is medium-bodied and savory, with delicate notes of red plum, crushed violets, licorice, graphite and a hint of dried meat. Layers of black olive and white pepper add depth and complexity. Smooth tannins provide gentle structure, leading to a persistent and elegant finish.” - 93 PTS, NICOLAS GREINACHER (11/2024)

IMPORTER NOTES:

OVERVIEW: “Drawn from a mosaic of historic parcels in the original villages of Tournon, Mauves, Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, and Lemps, each parcel contributes a distinct element to the blend. Old vines in Tournon, some dating to the early 1900s, grow on granite mixed with clay and bring depth and supple tannins; the more acidic granite slopes of Mauves provide freshness and structure; Pichonnier in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, with finer-grained granite, contributes generosity and ripe tannins; and Bachasson in Lemps adds structure from soils comparable to parts of Hermitage. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in a combination of wood tonneaux and stainless steel tanks, followed by 15–18 months of aging in barriques, a measured élevage designed to preserve the character of each terroir while building structure, complexity, and aging potential.”
