Jean-Louis Chave Saint Joseph 2023

CRITICAL ACCLAIM:

"Beautiful red and blue fruits, violets, leather, peppery herbs, and bouquet garni notes all emerge from the 2023 Saint Joseph, a medium to full-bodied effort that has a round, supple, pure style. It has ripe, polished tannins and a seamless, layered profile that's going to shine for two decades, if not more. Although I love it today, it will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age." - 95 PTS, JEB DUNNUCK (02/2026)

“Vinified with roughly 30% whole clusters, the 2023 Saint-Joseph reveals first impressions of highly fragrant orange blossom, dried violets and red cherry inflections. Midweight, round and refined, the markedly fresh 2023 can be enjoyed right out of the gate and I doubt it will ever close down.” - 93 PTS, NICOLAS GREINACHER, VINOUS (01/2026)

“Perfumed and approachable, the 2023 Saint-Joseph from Jean-Louis Chave is superb, revealing aromas of iris, violet, dark berries and fresh fruit mingled with a subtle menthol nuance. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and supple, it’s textured and precise, built around a core of fruit with good depth, framed by velvety tannins and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. Combining tension with a velvety profile, this is a particularly successful rendition.” - 93 PTS, YOHAN CASTAING, WINE ADVOCATE (05/2026)

IMPORTER NOTES:

OVERVIEW: "Drawn from a mosaic of historic parcels in the original villages of Tournon, Mauves, Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, and Lemps, each parcel contributes a distinct element to the blend. Old vines in Tournon, some dating to the early 1900s, grow on granite mixed with clay and bring depth and supple tannins; the more acidic granite slopes of Mauves provide freshness and structure; Pichonnier in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, with finer-grained granite, contributes generosity and ripe tannins; and Bachasson in Lemps adds structure from soils comparable to parts of Hermitage. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in a combination of wood tonneaux and stainless steel tanks, followed by 15–18 months of aging in barriques, a measured élevage designed to preserve the character of each terroir while building structure, complexity, and aging potential."
