Jean Doussoux Heritage XO Cognac
D&M NOTES:
TASTING: Comprised of 100% Ugni Blanc, this blend was assembled from barrels that held Cognacs ranging in age from 30-50 years. After assemblage, it came in at 43% alcohol by volume. This pours a lovely amber color in the glass. The nose is rich with deep notes of dried apricot, raw plum, and almond notes. Charles Neal notes that while it has fully developed aromas, this Cognac still maintains its freshness. On the palate, a lovely almond note weaves its way among dried fruits, while the long finish becomes more complex with a subtle hint of smoke and herbs along with plenty of spice.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Domaine du Chêne was originally founded by Jean-Baptiste Doussoux in 1865. Between 1965, and the early 1990s, Jean-Baptiste’s great grandson Jean Doussoux planted more vines and began to bottle his own Pineau des Charentes. In 1993 change came to the domaine. The ageing Jean Doussoux took on a new partner in Jean-Marie Baillif. Jean-Marie had grown up near the property and had known the Doussoux family since he was a young boy. As Jean Marie was groomed for takeover, they planted more vineyards and additional grape varieties. Today the domaine is owned by Jean-Marie Bailiff and his son Joachim who maintain and expand the excellence of the founding Doussoux family. The Domaine now covers nearly 95 hectares (234 acres) of vines. Recently they received HVE certification for their sustainable agriculture and are part of the Vignerons Independents association.
