Guimaro Ribeira Sacra "San Pedro" Tinto 2021
The winery name Guímaro means “rebel” in the local Gallego dialect, and a rebellios streak is needed to farm the steep terraced vineyards in Ribera Sacra. The family was one for the first to join the region when it was established in the mid-1990s, before they sold their wine to local wine bars. This comes from a set of vineyards on the Sil river, all with over 65 year old vines atop salte with iron and quartz. It is 80% Mencia, with the remainder split between Brancellao, Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), and a few others.
The nose shows a lifted and pretty style with light cherry, cola, tea leaf, gently earth and a just there savory basalmic edge. On the palate this has a silky texture with a quite fun mix of fruit and non-fruit elements. Grilled fish anyone? - D&M STAFF TASTING NOTES (02/2026)
CRITICAL ACCLAIM:
"The wine is perfumed, with hints of cranberries and geraniums. This is super elegant, medium-bodied and subtle, with fine tannins, racy acidity and a lovely ethereal quality. This San Pedro is considered a village wine, located in the sub-region of Amandi in Ribeira Sacra. It comes from 60-year-old vineyards. Fermented with 40% full clusters and aged for 18 months in a 3,000-liter oval foudre. Drink now or hold." - 95 PTS, JAMES SUCKLING
