Egly-Ouriet V.P. Extra Brut Champagne

CRITICAL ACCLAIM:

“The NV Champagne Grand Cru VP Viellisement Prolongent Extra Brut (which I believe is based on the 2014 vintage, with 2012 and 2013 reserve wine) is expressive and elegant with ripe pineapple, lemon custard, and white flowers. The mousse is elegant, and it’s long on the palate, with another level of refinement and precision. There’s more focus here, with great length and a wonderful and balanced savory edge. At this stage, it still feels like it would benefit from more time in bottle.” - 95 PTS, AUDREY FRICK, JEB DUNNUCK (11/2023)

“The NV (2015) Extra Brut VP (Viellissement Prolongé) is a gorgeous wine. After 84 months in the cellar and almost a year post-disgorgement, the 2015 base is ready to offer plenty of pleasure. Tangerine peel, dried orange peel, spice, mint, apricot and lightly honeyed notes all develop effortlessly. The 2015 is not an especially rich V.P. but it has plenty to offer. Dosage is 2 grams per liter.” - 94 PTS, ANTONIO GALLONI, VINOUS MEDIA (07/2023)

“As usual, the latest disgorgement of Egly's NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru V.P., this year based on the 2015 vintage complemented by reserve wines from 2014 and 2013, is one of the highlights of the range. Wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, green apple, freshly baked bread, crushed mint, honeycomb, white flowers and praline, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a racy and concentrated core, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish.” - 94 PTS, WILLIAM KELLEY, WINE ADVOCATE (12/2023)

IMPORTER NOTES:

TASTING: “Pale yellow. Aromas of spiced pears, yellow. peaches, baking spices, warm oatmeal. Precise, spicy, vinous; flavors of ginger, red apple, citrus fruits, toast.”

COMPOSITION: “70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay” (2015 base; disgorged 10/2023; 3g/L)

VINEYARDS: “Estate vineyards are located in the villages of Ambonnay, Verzenay and Bouzy. Soils combine chalk and limestone. 40 years, on average”

WINEMAKING: “Hand-harvested. Fermented on indigenous yeasts in older French oak barrels. Aged in bottle for seven years (vieillissement prolongé means “extended aging”). Bottled unfined and unfiltered.”

OVERVIEW: “V.P. spends more than seven years on fine lees, giving the wine its layered complexity and profound depth. This wine outperforms many vintage wines on the market — and even many vintage wines don’t spend this much time in the cellar. An unforgettable Champagne, and benchmark of the estate.”
