• Varner 2016 Santa Barbara County Chardonnay

Since the Varner duo has headed south from Santa Cruz, they seem to be reinvigorated by their new surroundings. The nose shows peach, white flowers, citrus oils, tropical fruits, and a light touch of butterscotch. The palate is lighter than the 2015 with a hit of oak and butterscotch to balance the stone fruits and light citrus tones.  D&M Tasting Notes

Bob and Jim Varner's 2016 Chardonnay is terrific. Orchard fruit, white flowers, mint, tangerine oil and light tropical overtones infuse the 2016 with notable character. Los Alamos Chardonnays tend to be a bit more lifted, but there is plenty of depth here. Most of the wine was aged in large foudre, which further helps in retaining energy.   92 Points Antonio Galloni, September 2019
