• Two James Distilling Company Catcher's Rye

100% Rye mashbill and all of the rye comes from the state of Michigan. After distillation, the spirit is aged for over four years in barrels that are a mix of #3 and #4 char. After aging, the distillery does choose to cut their whiskey down to 49.4% ABV before bottling. The nose of this Rye showcases classic aromas with a twist, up front you do get the classic butter pickle, joined to aromas of oak barrel, warm baking spices, and cinnamon red hots. The palate is up front with rye bread notes that is joined by barrel spice and cinnamon on the finish. D&M Tasting Notes

Detroit has a long and colorful history when it comes to booze; during Prohibition it’s estimated that the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River, carried 75% of the liquor supplied to the United States. One of the things that we enjoy about the new rise of Craft distilleries is that the people behind them, their hopes dreams and aspirations are of this time and place; these are our contemporaries, not our ancestors. As a result we can talk about the start of Two James as it came to be in the last decade. Partners David Landrum and Peter Bailey started bantering around business plans for a distillery in the early 2010s. They even had a California Sojourn in Santa Barbara (it didn’t work out) before they returned to their native Detroit to set up shop. While there is a rich history of distilling in Michigan (Leopold Brothers got their start in Ann Arbor) and Detroit, they realized that theirs would be the first legal distillery in Detroit since Prohibition. The space they chose for their distillery is a former taxi repair shop in the shadow of the Michigan Central Station in Corktown: the oldest neighborhood in Detroit. In the early days they were helped by David’s 15 years in the restaurant industry, and they counted the late Dave Pickerell as a mentor and informal adviser. Distilled from 100% Michigan rye and pure water from the Great Lakes, Catcher’s Rye is a testament to the grain’s distinctive terroir. Each drop is artfully produced and aged for a minimum of two years in traditional, charred new American oak 53 gallon barrels. With delicious spice notes and a subtle fig finish, Catcher’s Rye proves there is no substitute for time or proportion. This is a labor of love, accept no phonies. Distillery Notes
