This continues to impress for its price and its pedigree, it should be noted that it is a little lighter than the last string of vintages coming out of the drought. The nose shows game, espresso, olive tapenade, white pepper, mint, and deep black cherry. The palate is moderate in weight with up front espresso, game, and full black cherry coming though with air. No longer a steal at $18, but lovely for the mid twenty price. D&M Tasting Notes

1.720 cases. A great Syrah combines hedonism and restraint, animal aromatics with floral bouquets, richness of fruit with elegant lift, and nobility with modesty. This is Syrah’s true calling: creating excitement and tension from balancing antipodes. 

The husband and wife team began making a small amount of wine in Lompoc, CA in 2003 under the Piedrasassi label. The focus of Piedrasassi’s wine program is cool climate Syrah. Sashi & Melissa believe that good Syrah can be made at many sites in Santa Barbara County, but it is at the cool climate sites that Syrah is at its most compelling; producing the most complex aromas and the most savory textures. The vineyard sites for Piedrasassi range from Ballard Canyon in the east to the Santa Rita Hills and Arroyo Grande in the west.

The 2018 P.S. Syrah is our most important cuvêe — it is an introduction to our wine making philosophy and the product of years of evolution in making coastal cool-climate California Syrah. It was obvious early on that we were gifted with a rare vintage 

in 2018, one that would showcase our aesthetic ideals. Ample rainfall, moderate summer temperatures, and low yields produced grapes with concentration and freshness — the building blocks for making a great wine. We knew not to push the extraction, that we must gently pull the tannins and be careful to capture the vibrancy of the fruit. The grapes come from predominately younger vineyards, which were mostly de-stemmed. There is also a healthy dose of older vine Syrah from Bien Nacido, which was mostly fermented whole cluster. Monocepage Syrahs were the first wines I fell in love with, particularly the Syrahs from the appellations in the Northern Rhone Valley: Côtie Rotie, Saint Joseph, Cornas, and Croze Hermitage. 

The 2018 P.S. Syrah was aged in neutral barrels and bottled unfined, unfiltered and with minimal sulfur after 15 months of elevage. Unfortunately, we printed the labels before having the laboratory test the alcohol — the actual ABV is 12.7%! Winery Notes
