The Grand Reserve Non Vintage is a blend of 70% 2009 and 30% 2008 reserve wine and was bottled in 2010, finished with 8 grams of sugar. This is a decidedly more zingy Champagne with aromas of baking spices, red apples, and sugar plums. The palate is moderate weight with flavors of fresh pastries, chalk and a kiss of yellow plums with moderate plus acidity. This appears to be a year where dungeness crab is back on the menu, so try a simple Oven Roasted Dungeness Crab. D&M Tasting Notes
Côte des Blancs just below Epernay we explore the work of Philippe Gonet. The family’s house is located in Les Mesnil Sur Oger, which is well known for the dazzling nature of its white soils due to their high chalk content. The vineyards here are rated as Grand Cru and planted entirely to Chardonnay. As a side note, one reason why wine people concentrate so heavily on the land and the soil is that winemakers and vintages come and go, but the land remains the same.
The Gonet family has been making Champange in Sur Oger since the house was founded in 1830. Sister and Brother, Chantal and Pierre Gonet, took over the reigns of the house in 1990 at an early age following the unexpected death of their father. Chantal was just 22 and finishing up University and Pierre was just a year older, and had recently completed enology training. Though young, the intervening 25 years have shown them up to the task of handling their 46 acres of vines spread across 47 parcels as well as the small amount of purchased fruit. The Grand Reserve NV is made up of: 30% Chardonnay from the village of Montgueux, 60% Pinot Noir from the villages of Montgueux, Le Breuil, Fontaine sur Ay and Vertus, and 10% Pinot Meunier from La Chapelle-Monthodon. After harvest, the wine was aged in stainless steel for six months before being transferred to their chalk cellars in Les Mesnil Sur Oger. Michael Kennel, D&M Wine Buyer
