Maize/18 carat gold color; an inconsequential sediment is not a problem. First sniffs detect spice cake, leafy/twiggy/forest vegetation scents: later whiffs pick up traces of toasted grains, kernel/bean, parchment; a delicate aromatic profile that's dry, grainy. Entry is sweeter than expected, resiny/oaky, honeyed: midpalate features more of the resiny oak influence, vanilla wafer, deep roasted grains. Ends up dry to off-dry. 4 Stars, Highly Recommended Spirit Journal March 2014.
An essential component of the house blends, the Nikka Coffey Grain is an original single grain whisky, distilled mainly from corn in a Coffey still. Exotic, fruity and unique, it is meant for the connoisseur in search of an unconventional whisky.
Nikka operates two Coffey stills (named after its inventor Aeneas Coffey) within the Miyagikyo distillery for the elaboration of its grain whiskies. Imported from Scotland in 1963, these old stills yield a distillate with more flavour and depth than modern column stills, imparting a distinct character that defines the house blends. These two unique bottling's showcase the innovative spirit of Nikka. Distillery Notes
