Michel Jacquot Brut Champagne

Entirely Pinot Noir. Half of this is from the 2018 harvest with 40% from the warm 2017 vintage and the remainder coming from the Gaucher family’s perpetual reserve. It was kept on its lees for 24 months before being disgorged with a dosage of 8 grams per liter. This possesses a clean and focused nose with cream, mint, apple, citrus and a just there hazelnut character that emerges with air. The palate is precise and balanced with apple, mascarpone, and just there citrus notes to finish. This is best enjoyed in the near term through 2025. With its freshness and precision this will work quite well as an aperitif or with a starter that perhaps has been fried. D&M Tasting Notes

This comes from the sleepy village of Arconville in the Cote des Bar, in Champagne’s far south. This is something of a young man’s side project to create something a little different from the work of his father, Bernard Gaucher. Though the family got their start in the wine industry in the late 1800s, it was post WWII when grandfather Georges decided to move from a combination of grain and grape production entirely into the wine business. This entrepreneurial spirit was passed on to his son Bernard Gaucher who started his eponymous label in 1985. This all brings us up to date with Guillaume Gaucher, who joined his father at the winery in 2017. One of the questions that I had was: where did the name Michel Jacquot come from in a family of Gauchers? It turns out that Michel was father to Guillaume’s great-grandmother and provided the initial plots of land that drew the family into the landowning class. Guillaume is in his early 30s and following his return to the family estate in 2016-2017, he has pushed the family toward the widespread usage of organics, and they began the process of being certified as organic in 2020. The 47 acres of vineyards are mostly planted to Pinot Noir with a small amount of Chardonnay as well. The cuvee is Guillaume’s Brut Reserve. Michael Kennel, D&M
