This wine reminds the writer of the time when to keep his sanity over tasting 200+ Napa wines on a Saturday morning he started to ask the presenting winemakers thier favorite wine present. The name Matthiasson kept coming up time and time again amongst much more expensive and established wineries recovering from the wake of the 2017 Wine Country Fires. The 2016 may not get the press, but it is an amazingly well put together wine with an aroma set of cassis, bramble blackberry, cedar, pencil lead, and a hit of almost savory garrigue. The palate is decidedly Cab with good acid and a flavor set that calls to mind Bordeaux with pencil lead, spice, bramble fruits and cassis on a taunt, as opposed to, lush frame. D&M Tasting Notes
The nose shows abundant red fruits, lots of bright cherry along with bramble-berries, such as blackberry, cranberry, mulberry, and framed with hints of mineral/herbal characters such as graphite, cedar, and pencil shavings. The palate is vibrant and fresh, with light tannin and beautiful acidity. WineMaker Notes
Winemaking, for us, is a natural extension of farming. We explore classical expressions of different grape varieties, some well-known like Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon, and some rare like Ribolla Gialla or Refosco. In all cases we try to respect the purity of the variety and the individuality of the site. Our wines are refreshing, complement food, and are moderate in alcohol.
