In the mid 1800’s the cocktail was invented. This was in large part due to the low quality and aggressive spirits being produced at the time. The spirits were so harsh that other liqueurs and flavors needed to be added to make the drinks palatable for the patrons. 

We have come a long way from the simple Martini and Manhattan, two of the first popular cocktails. The market is now abundant with a variety of sweet and fruity liqueurs, vermouths, aperitifs, amaros and other bitters. These are not the foundation of the cocktail but rather the elements that give the cocktail balance, complexity, and interest. In the hands of a professional these products can turn a twenty-dollar bourbon into a cocktail masterpiece.
