Lacourte Godbillon 1er Cru Terroirs d'Ecueil Brut Champagne

This opens with a taut and zippy nose of plum, lemon, white cherries, apricot, apple, ginger, and almond. On the palate there is a pleasant fruitiness to this, backed up by good acid and a flavor set of tree fruits, marzipan, and just there lemon zest to finish. This will drink quite well through at least 2028. This is a Champagne that, with its presence of fruit balanced by acidity, calls for a meal with some substance to it, so more main course than aperitif. Try this with simple and satisfying French cooking like chicken roulade.  D&M Tasting Notes

Ecueil is unique in its soils as they vary from sand atop deep chalk to clay atop shallow chalk at the bottom of the slopes. The Terroirs d’Ecuei MV, is made up of 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay. 65% of this comes from the excellent 2018 vintage with the remainder from the previous three years of 2015-2017. It was vinified in mostly stainless steel with 10% neutral barrels used in the winery. From there it was transferred to bottle for 24 months of lees ageing before being disgorged with a scant 5 grams per liter and a low total sulfur of 20 mg/l.

Made by a couple in, at least, the second chapter of their lives. The Lacourte and Godbillon family can trace their history back at least nine generations. In 1947 the current proprietress Géraldine Lacourte’s grandparents began bottling Champagne under their own name instead of simply selling the grapes to the large houses. They used an innovation for the time, which was the local co-op. This arrangement continued with the next generation when in 1968 Géraldine’s parents took over and, in addition to vinifying the wines at the co-op, began to hand disgorge a few thousand bottles in the family’s courtyard. Géraldine Lacourte’s life seemed to be destined for a quite different trajectory as she was a corporate executive for a multinational glass manufacturer in Germany. While living the corporate life, she met and married Richard Desvignes– a fellow corporate warrior in the printing industry. When it came time for her parents to retire in 2007, she convinced her husband that a life in the vineyards may be as fulfilling, if not more so than chasing sales growth. So in 2007 they both enrolled in a one year program at the school of Avize before beginning their life as winery owners. Their progress has been methodical since taking over: they left the co-op in 2012 to be able to control how their wines are made, and since 2017 they have converted their vineyards to first organic and now biodynamic farming practices. They now employ three people year round (and a small flock of sheep) to better care for the vineyards. They have remained small and focused with a total production of around 3500 cases. Their philosophy to winemaking begins in the vineyards: the best wines come from the best grapes. Those grapes come from 20.5 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with an average vine age of 30 years almost entirely in their home village of Ecueil (1.2 acres comes from the neighboring village.)
