Oh yeah, this is a Syrah! The nose shows crushed rocks, black pepper, violets, green olives, huckleberry, briary blackberry, and rosemary. The palate is moderate in weight with an initial hit of spice and pepper giving way to violets, slate, black fruits and a bit of raspberry. From two sites in the Yorkville Highlands, this is very well put together. D&M Tasting Notes
The 2018 Syrah North Coast is a gorgeous wine. Black pepper, leather, red fruit, cedar, tobacco and dried herbs add striking layers of nuance that develop first in the aromatics and then further on the palate. All the elements come together so effortlessly.
93 Points Antonio Galloni, Vinous April 2020
A blend of two Yorkville Highlands vineyard sites, the rugged high elevation Halcon Vineyard (see below) and the equally compelling Hawks Butte Vineyard which sits at 1200 ft. with rocky, south facing slopes. The grapes are all crushed by foot and fermented whole cluster, with nothing more than gentle punchdowns throughout. Pressed to old, neutral French oak barrique for a 10 month elevage, capturing and preserving the delicate and expressive nature.
Hawks Butte adds slightly more density and fruit while still wildly fresh with lithe tannin and Halcon compliments with brooding structure, wet earth, camphor and cedar. Winery Notes
