Glen Spey 10 Yr. Mossburn Bottling Single Malt Scotch

This is a bright and light whisky with aromas of banana, tropical fruit, white flowers, fresh grain, and custard. The palate maintains a good textural presence with flavors of banana hard candy, tropical fruits, dulce de leche, grain and a light salted chocolate note on the finish. This is the Scotch to reach for when the Sun is shining. D&M Tasting Notes

Glen Spey has been quietly producing spirit for over 130 years. Glen Spey was founded in 1878 by James Stuart & Co. as the Mill of Rothes. The initial distillery name was highly literal, the buildings that make up Glen Spey began their life as an oatmeal mill. James Stuart began as a businessman as a corn merchant before deciding to pivot to the more lucrative whisky trade. (James Stuart also founded Glenrothes at around the same time as the Mill of Rothes, situated 500 feet away on the other side of the Rothes hill) James Stuart simply added the needed distilling equipment to the existing mill, making Glen Spey a distillery popup with staying power. Within the decade, James Stuart set his sights on The Macallan, which he bought after selling Glen Spey to the British firm W&A Gilbey. W&A Gilbey’s purchase of Glen Spey in 1887 marked the first time that a British firm bought a Scottish Single Malt Distillery. Over the years and through a series of acquisitions, Glen Spey falls now under the ownership of Diageo, with most of its 1.39 million liter capacity used for the J&B blends.

In terms of distillery setup, Glen Spey does have some idiosyncrasies. Many Scottish distilleries have long used local water sources to cool the stills and condense the spirit. With multiple distilleries located close by upstream along the Rothes Burn, by the time the water reaches Glen Spey the temperature was too high to cool the stills and condense the spirit. As a result the distillery utilized after-coolers to help condense the vapors from the still. Times change, and with updated fisheries regulations distilleries can no longer just dump their hot water directly back into the Burn. Yet these after-coolers remain. Another quirk of Glen Spey is the lantern shape with a constricting neck on all of its stills, and the addition of purifiers on both spirits stills. The non-typical constriction of the neck provides for more reflux into the still while the purifiers act as small condensers, returning a proportion of the alcohol vapors back to the pot to be re-distilled. This acting together results in an increase in the amount of 'reflux' within the pot stills, leading to a lighter prettier whisky. At this time of writing Glen Spey is one of only two other Diageo owned distilleries (Glenlossie and Strathmill) to use purifiers. Michael Kennel, D&M
