Decidedly more muted and monolythic versus the more open knit 2014. The nose shows some earth, a light spice and a just there cranberry note. The palate is moderate in weight with ample tannins, a pepper spice and black cherry note that emerges with around 1 hour of air. D&M Tasting Notes
We kind of fell into making a Syrah. For years, I’ve walked through the 1/3 of an acre Syrah block at Smith Road while looking at our Pinot Noir, but I wasn’t overly interested in making Syrah. In 2014, I made a deal with Steve Remde, the owner to take the fruit for that year and graf the vines over to something else in 2015. Tat was our plan until the Syrah turned out so well, becoming one of our favorite wines from the 2014 vintage. So now, the Ghostwriter makes a small production of Santa Cruz Syrah. The 2014 was fermented without added yeast employing 50% whole clusters then aged in a combination of French barrels and puncheons for 19 months.
The Ghostwriter is about Santa Cruz and it’s many terroirs, old heritage vineyards, and the light, acid driven, pretty, perfumey style of wine that it is capable of. “Ghostwriter” represents the idea that a wine may be the pages that contain a story, but that the story itself belongs to the sites, the vines, and the vintage. The winemaker, when successful, may be a lively storyteller, but only that. Winery Notes
