From a Grand Cru village of Ambonnay. Eric Rodez can trace his family history back eight generations in Champagne with most of them centered around the village of Ambonnay. The Rodez family history of independent winemaking stretches back with records that Eric’s ancestor Jean-Baptiste made and sold wine in 1757. Knowing that his future lay in wine, Eric spent three years in Burgundy, absorbing their processes of winemaking before returning to Champagne to work at Krug as an oenologist. His time in Burgundy and with Krug, with their focus on small parcels and oak fermentation, has provided a distinctly different viewpoint of making wine when compared to his peers--especially in the early years after he took over the family estate in 1984.

With his blue frame glasses and white Porsche SUV--he looks more a big city architect than a son of the soil farmer. Eric is an iconoclast, but certainly he is no misanthrope. He is deeply tied to his town and in fact spent a six year period as the Mayor of Ambonnay. Farming on the estate’s 35 parcels spread across 22 acres in Ambonnay has always been sustainable, and over the last fifteen years Eric has been practicing biodynamically without going through the certification process. He feels that this method of vineyard management leads to fruit with more depth of flavor and concentration. If you were to make your way to Ambonnay you may be impressed by the substantial reduction in tanks at the winery and the large number of oak barrels. The cellar looks closer to what one would expect in Burgundy versus Champagne. This precision in winemaking allows for quite the level of specificity. Michael Kennel, D&M
