Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth 1.0 Liter
Carpano Antica Formula 1.0 Liters. Made from the Carpano distillery's "ancient formula " for red vermouth. Only recently available in North America, Carpano Antica Formula is the king of red vermouth: although traditionally served straight up as an aperitif, after-dinner drink, or even as an accompaniment to rich desserts, it will transform a common Manhattan or Red Martini into a cocktail fit for even the most refined palate.
1 oz gin
1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz Campari bitters
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass 3/4 filled with cracked ice.
Add a splash of soda water if desired.
Garnish with a half slice of orange.
Antica Formula is a red vermouth made from an original recipe by Antonio Benedetto Carpano, the man credited with creating modern vermouth in Turin in 1786. Carpano originally developed vermouth by mixing herbs with a base wine and then sweetening it by adding spirit. His new drink proved so popular that soon his shop had to stay open 24 hours a day to satisfy demand.
Carpano had been inspired by a German aromatised wine and was a fan of German poetry. As a result, he named his new product after the German word for wormwood, wermut, which was frequently used to flavour wine at the time.
